While summer is here for most, the Everdome team has been hard at work behind the scenes completing a complex and vital task that will further solidify the foundations of our metaverse environment.
Our developers have today finished work on scaling our servers and improving our metaverse architecture to provide a more dynamic, stable and scalable environment as we prepare for some big things just around the corner.
For the more technically minded among you, this means that in our metaverse architecture, user-created spaces previously operated on a one-to-one server allocation model, where each space triggered the launch of a dedicated server instance upon creation.
This static approach, while ensuring immediate availability, resulted in significant overheads due to idle server instances when spaces were not in active use.
To optimize resource allocation and improve scalability, we just finished a major transition to a dynamic server provisioning model using AWS.
In this model, a pool of unassigned server instances is maintained. These instances are dynamically allocated to user-created spaces based on real-time demand, leveraging AWS Auto Scaling and Elastic Load Balancing.
When a space becomes active, an available server from the pool is assigned, reducing unnecessary resource consumption.
Conversely, when the demand decreases, the server is de-allocated and returned to the pool or shut down if no longer needed, thus minimizing costs and improving resource efficiency.
Critical system spaces, such as our HQ and Mars Theater, remain on dedicated, always-on server instances to ensure consistent availability and performance.
This hybrid approach allows us to balance and more fully optimize resource utilization, cost-efficiency, and user experience within our metaverse.
You might also notice some changes in our build - as we are also currently testing some new features and functionalities. We will be announcing these a little later on once more tests are complete - so be assured that the team is working on new features to add further utility to our metaverse destination.
There may be some intermittent downtime over the next few days while we make this big change, however this complex task is undertaken to give us the stablest of foundations as we gear up for some really exciting developments coming to Everdome soon.
